7th Grays Conquest Cubs were able to raise £600 for the charity by taking part in various fundraising activities including a sponsored dog walk, a sponsored 5k run, and baking and selling cakes at the local church. 2 of the Cubs, George and Louise, set up a stall outside their house and sold lots of cakes to passers-by, and another Cub, Jake, raised over £100 on his own with a sponsored bike ride.
On 1st February the Cubs were joined at their headquarters in Bradleigh Avenue by June Maylin and her guide dog Shannon – who received a cheque on behalf of the charity – and Tina Boreham from Guide Dogs who explained how the funds will help support the two million people living with sight loss in the UK. Jake also received a certificate and a goodie bag from Guide Dogs for his notable contribution.
The £600 raised will sponsor three puppies through the first year of their life and training, and the Cubs will receive regular updates during the year on how the puppies are getting on and what the work of a guide dog involves.
A Million Hands is a campaign that aims to mobilise half a million Scouts across the country to build lasting relationships with the local community. The campaign supports four social issues identified by the young people: dementia, disability, mental health and clean water and sanitation, and is supported by six charity partners, including Guide Dogs.
Visit www.amillionhands.org.uk for more information on the campaign and www.guidedogs.org.uk for more information or to support Guide Dogs.
