Introducing Thurrock’s new Youth Commissioner

12th October 2015
We are excited to introduce our new District Youth Commissioner, Glenn Mead. We spoke to Glenn about his new role.

First of all Glenn, congratulations on your new appointment. Can you tell us a bit about your Scouting history and your other roles in Scouting?

Thank you! I have been in Scouting since age 6, the earliest age I could. I was a member of 6th Grays (now Hillside) right through until Explorers. I was then an Explorer with Pyxis, whilst young leading at 7th Grays Beavers and Orsett & Bulphan Scouts. As well as all of this I was the drummer for Thurrock Gang Show for 6 years. I’m now on my 7th year of involvement with Orsett & Bulphan Whitmore Troop, as well as being on the social media team for the National Scout and Guide Symphony Orchestra.

The Youth Commissioner role is brand new appointment in the District, what does the role entail?

I will be going around the District asking for thoughts and suggestions from all sections, I will then collate and report my findings back to the District team. My job is to help the Scouting movement become more youth-led.

Over the next 3 years, what will be the main goals that you will be working towards?

I would like to help the movement become more youth-led. I will be making sure that participants from all sections will have an active say in the running and programming of their District.

How will you be encouraging Groups and Sections to ensure their young people are given the opportunity to shape their Scouting experience?

I will be visiting Groups where I can and attending District events and camps. I will be walking around with my thoughts jar and having conversations with participants of all ages. In order to help on a Group level, it would be really helpful if leaders of troops/packs/colonies could encourage participants to suggest ideas for program planning.

Finally, what are your top three most memorable experiences you have had in Scouting?

  1. My trip to Australia in 2007, where I visited the Australian Jamboree and met some friends that I still have contact with.
  2. My first time visiting NSGSO in 2011. I made some friends that I know will last a lifetime and played music that I love, as well as receiving support from professional tutors.
  3. My DofE Gold expedition in the Brecon Beacons during this summer was unforgettable for many reasons. I’m really proud of my achievement and the achievement of my entire team. We were very appreciative of the support we received from our district and of the nice comments that were given by our assessors.

Keep up with Glenn’s adventures over on his Facebook Page, Thurrock District Youth Commissioner, and if you have any questions on becoming more youth-led in your Groups or Sections, feel free to send an email to youth-comm@thurrockscouts.org.uk.
