The first evening was the turn of the Cubs to clean up the riverfront near to the fort. Armed with litter pickers and black bags, the Cubs rushed off to see who can gather the most rubbish. The cubs were so effective the ranger’s truck was overflowing with black bags by the end of the evening.
The second evening saw the Scouts heading down to the fort. While the Scouts were more sedate than the Cubs, their greater litter picking power meant yet again the truck was full of black bags.
The final evening brought the Beavers into the fray. The Cubs and Scouts had done such a good job that there was not much litter left for them to pick up, but this didn’t stop them looking for some! With hi-viz covering the Beavers from shoulder to feet, they found and retrieved the final bits of litter around the fort.
David Veitch, Chadwell’s Group Leader was impressed with the enthusiasm the young people had, “All the young people really enjoyed themselves and were proud of what they had achieved. The group would like to do it again next year.”
Thanks go to Ray Reeves, Coalhouse Fort’s ranger, for giving up his time, Alli Stanford for providing the equipment and KFC in Grays for providing bottled water for the three days.
