Scouts, Explorers and Adults take on North Downs Way Challenge

Over the Easter holidays, an intrepid group of Scouts, Explorer Scouts and adult volunteers from across Thurrock tackled the challenge of walking the entire North Downs Way, from Farnham to Dover.

The 246km route would take them over steep hills, through woods and past various flora and fauna on their expedition to the East Kent coast. Luckily the weather was fair the entire time which not only kept the spirits high, but also made the stunning views even more beautiful.

The group were not camping on route however, opting instead to stay in a building at Downe Scout Adventures Centre in Orpington each night and being ferried each day by minibus to their start and end points.

There were two rest days included in the schedule which saw the group explore Chislehurst Caves and enjoy some of the activities available at the campsite, including its swimming pool.

Their arrival in Dover was met with a reception from parents and supporters in bright sunshine on Good Friday, before a celebratory meal in Folkestone and the final trip back to Downe to relax and pack.

Wendy Thomas, one of the volunteers walking with the group, had huge praise for the young people, “All the young people have done so well. We are all proud of them all. Their behaviour and commitment has been outstanding. Through good and hard times they have always kept going. A big thank you to them for making this such a brilliant event.”

A huge thanks from the group goes to the entire support team who have been driving and feeding everyone over the two weeks; Rates Ford who provided sweatshirts for the entire group; Gateway Academy and the Sporting Academy for the free hire of their minibuses; Hovis for providing free bread; and to 1st Corringham Group for organising and running the trip.
